Abstract :
Summary form only given. The X-ray satellite spectra arising due to 2p3/2-13x-1-3x-13d-1 (x = s, p, d) transition array, in elements with Z = 40 to 92, have been calculated. While the energies of various transitions of the array have been determined by using available Hartree Fock-Slater data on 1s-1 -2p-13x-1-1 and 2p3/2-1-3x-1 ,3x´-1, Auger transition energies and their relative intensities have been estimated by considering cross-sections of singly ionized 2x-1-1 (x = s, p) states and then of subsequent Coster-Kronig and shake off processes. The calculated spectra have been compared with the measured satellite energies in Lα1 spectra. Their intense peaks have been identified as the observed satellite lines. The one to one correspondence between the peaks in calculated spectra and the satellites in measured spectra has been established on the basis of the agreement between the separations in the peak energies and those in the measured satellite energies. It has been established that six satellites observed in the Lα1 region of the X-ray spectra of various elements and named α3, α4, α5, α´, αix and αx in order of increasing energy are mainly emitted by 2p3/2-13d-1-3d-2 transitions. On the basis of agreement between computed spectra and measured satellites, it is observed that the satellite α3 in 40Zr to 48Cd and α´ in 74W to 92U is emitted by the superposition of the most intense transition 3F4-3F4, contributing in order of decreasing intensity. It has been well established that the transition 1F3-1G4 is the main source of the emission of the satellite α4 in the spectra of elements with Z = 40-48. The same transition 1F3-1G4 and other two transitions namely 1P1-1D2 and - F3-1D2 have been proved to be the main origin of the satellite, αix, reported in the range Z = 74-92. Further, the line α5 in the spectra of elements with Z = 40-48 has been assigned to mainly the 3D3-3F4, 3D2-3F3, 1P1-1D2 and 1F3-1D2 transitions. Finally, the satellite αx, reported in the spectra of elements with Z = 74-92, has been associated with the transition 3D3-3F4. The possible contributions of other transitions of the 2p3/2-13x-1-3x-13d-1 (x = s, p, d) array having appreciable intensities, have also been discussed
