  • Abstract
A novel design method which determines the optimal rotor and stator pole arcs for a switched reluctance motor (SRM) has been developed. This method uses an imaginary gap-dividing surface and winding function theory (WFT) to determine the inductance profile of the SRM for a range of possible stator and rotor pole arcs. The torque profiles for these combinations of pole arcs are calculated to determine the arcs yielding the maximum average torque and minimum torque ripple. Methods of introducing the nonlinearity of a skewed rotor and saturation effects are proposed, which play an important role in torque production of SRM
