  • Abstract
    At INTELEC´89, Kenney, Whittall and Larocque presented a paper on the planning and implementation aspects of replacing fuel dependent turbo-electric generating units by photovoltaic power supplies on a major microwave system in Africa. The present paper documents lessons learned during four years of operation and maintenance since the last paper. The major assumptions of the design were essentially correct. However, a number of design adjustments are recommended. Information and recommendations regarding sizing, type and life of batteries as well as specific gravity are presented. Modifications to the controllers are described. The document provides statistical and other information concerning the impact of the conversion program on maintenance and service reliability
