Abstract :
A valuable source of information for decisions on maintenance or improvements for redundant systems is the evaluation of importance on the basis of fault trees and cutsets, as used for the probabilistic risk assessment (PRA). This paper provides a short review of the technique, and outlines the main problem areas for its application. If properly applied, the technique leads to a more efficient use of available resources, and to an improved dependability of systems
