Abstract :
Watch industry, the mainstay of the Swiss economy, migrated in 1972 to 1976 through USA to Japan, only to continue its route towards Hong Kong and Singapore. The worlds leading manufacturing nation of cameras and optics, Germany, lost them, during 1974 to 1980, to Japan, as well as their fine mechanics industry to the Far East. These migrations were very rapid, only a couple of years between the beginning of the process and the total collapse in the previous home country. The world technology scene changes constantly and the intercontinental migration is very fast, especially in the new emerging technologies. USA having been the leading power in supersonic military aircraft, Europe developed the first supersonic civil air transport, the Concorde. Originally an American invention, the computer industry has now migrated to the Far East, notably to Taiwan. The new massive applications of mobile communications are today in the hands of the Finns and the Swedes, and the Germans and the French hold the mass use of chip card applications. Will they be able to maintain their leading positions in these new, emerging technologies? What will be the next dominant technologies, and who will hold them? What is being left to the US?.
