Abstract
Summary form only given. DC glow discharges in argon and helium (p=0.1-1 torr; I=10-6-10-2 A) have been simulated using the PIC-MCC methodology using 1d-3v and 2d-3v models. The theory for glow discharges is presented. PIC results are analyzed and compared qualitatively and quantitatively with theory. The matrix sheath approximation, assumed in theory, is shown to be a good assumption. The positive column temperature and density predicted by theory are compared to quantities calculated in PIC. Comparison of theoretical quantities with PIC quantities is quite favorable, considering the differences in the models
