Abstract :
Single-phase induction motors (SPIM) are widely used in domestic appliances, workshops and factories. The most common practice for starting SPIM is to install a starting capacitor in series with the auxiliary winding. In some applications, two capacitors are used. One is used during the starting period to help create the starting torque. The other one is used during the running condition to improve efficiency. This paper presents a novel high performance SPIM controlled by hysteresis current controller and without any capacitors. The proposed control technique depends on keeping the main and auxiliary winding currents in quadrature during both starting and loading conditions. The proposed technique offers some advantages over the conventional control techniques such as maximum efficiency, wide range for controlling motor speed, smooth and quick starting with maximum torque and low torque pulsations. The overall system has been simulated and the performance curves are presented and discussed.
