Abstract
The authors report on the Advanced Battery Electric Energy Storage Systems Project, which has as its goal the development of a 1 MW/8 MWh class advanced-battery electric energy storage pilot plant having an AC-AC energy efficiency of 70% and a service life of 1500 cycles. The project includes research and development on advanced battery concepts and the development of system technology. The research and development items and the development schedule are illustrated. The total budget for a 12-year program, of which 8.5 years have elapsed, is 17 billion yen. The achievements so far and the current status of the project are described with emphasis on the R&D on advanced batteries
