Abstract :
The Exploring the Environment (ETE) project team develops problem-based learning modules that engage high school students in authentic environmental Earth science situations such as biodiversity, sustainability, and deforestation. One of the overarching objectives is to create a multidisciplinary learning environment that emphasizes active student learning, teamwork, and authentic assessment techniques. Addressed in this article is the design, development, and evaluation of an Environmental Earth Science module with the focus on the use of remote sensing as a research tool. Satellites, computers, remote sensing, the super information highway-the list of technology and information available to classroom teachers is seemingly endless and growing exponentially. Technology-based applications and their significance are changing the landscape of tools available to science teachers. ETE modules feature essential teacher resources and an effective infusion of remote sensing tools and resources. This project demonstrates educational applications of NASA´s wealth of scientific, remote sensing information. ETE emphasizes preparing teachers to use inquiry-based instructional methods and tools (remote sensing databases delivered over the Internet)
