Abstract
Fractal image compression ensures high compression ratio and image fidelity. However, it suffers from long encoding time. Real time fractal coding requires high throughput not achievable by software implementations or with general digital signal processors (DSP). In this paper, a high throughput hardware/software architecture for real time fractal coding is presented. The encoder is characterised by a reduced domain pool and an optimal luminance transformation parameter calculation. The self-similarity search is implemented in a parallel architecture allowing the processing of a couple of 4×4 blocks simultaneously.
