Abstract
Notice of Retraction

The cities and Towns along the Jialing River can be categorized into 9 spatial patterns: top-outside, top-inside, heart, neck, waist-inside, waist-outside, twins, straight and intersection. Each pattern has its own advantages and disadvantages. Analysis on 95 cities and Towns in the mainstream of Jialing River shows that the dominant spatial patterns are top-outside, straight, and intersection. Optimal micro-location selection model reveals that the guiding principle for cities/Towns construction is to maximize water affinity; the foremost factor in selecting sites is topography; the optimal model of human settlement, that is, the areas “surrounded by mountain and circled by water”, can be found in incised meander areas.
