Abstract :
The influence of the morphological-absorptive characteristics on the electrochemical activity of phosphoric acid fuel cell (PAFC) gas-diffusion electrodes (both anode and cathode) is presented. From porosimetric analysis and phosphoric acid absorption measurements, a set of parameters is derived relating the morphological structure of each catalyst layer and its absorptive capacity. The percentage of acid occupation (PAO) has been found to describe in a unified manner both the morphological and the absorptive characteristics of PAFC electrodes. The PAO is strongly influenced by the percentage of PTFE, whereas the sintering temperature exerts a lesser influence. A ratio of unity between the gas and liquid fraction of the total porosity (PAO=50%) is shown to be a prerequisite for the highest level of electrochemical performance of both cathodes and anodes
