  • Abstract
The hypermedia photonic information network (HM-PIN) has been proposed as a future broadband network providing home users, at reasonable cost, with 10-20 Mb/s communication channels for MPEG-2-class high-quality video and voice data. The proposed HM-PIN architecture consists of many local broadcast-and-select (B&S) switch networks and a backbone network. The access layer is a simple point-to-point logical link, such as an ATM-PDS, and all connection services are realized at local networks by B&S switching. A backbone network consisting of a WDM path network and large capacity photonic ATM routers realizes a service-independent large-capacity full-mesh path among these local networks
