Abstract
The authors discuss mathematical optimization of structural systems on a CRAY Y-MP 8/864 machine. A microtasking algorithm was developed for optimization of large structural systems subjected to displacement and stress constraints using the optimality criteria approach. The algorithm has been implemented in Cray FORTRAN (CFT17). Microtasking was performed through the use of compiler directives. In order to perform microtasking, the algorithm is divided into 23 processes. Some processes perform only vectorization. Others perform both vectorization and microtasking. The combination of vectorization and parallel processing capabilities makes design optimization of large structural systems such as multistorey high-rise buildings or Space stations feasible
