Abstract
Today cost cutting imposes ever growing pressure on manufacturers and end users. There are different approaches to reach this goal. In the past all efforts resulted in the same basic conclusions since safety and reliability must never be compromised. The conventional approaches often meant that either expensive equipment or costly maintenance procedures had to be used in hazardous areas. Now fresh ideas have lead to new solutions which suddenly seem so obvious but for some obscure reason have never been tried before. The following chapters show how proven principles applied in a new context can lead to a major step forward making hazardous area instrumentation almost as easy to engineer and handle as safe area equipment. The reader will learn how to overcome the limitations of intrinsic safety and still make use of its advantages regarding service and maintenance both in conventional field instrumentation and in bus systems
