Abstract :
A two-year demonstration test program at the Chino 10 MW, 40 MWh battery energy storage facility, designed to demonstrate the costs, benefits and technical feasibility of the plant operating in a substation environment for energy management purposes, is described. Since startup, the Chino facility has undergone 46 cycles under various charge and discharge regimes. The primary purpose of the first series of tests was to establish baseline operating parameters for the facility for later comparison. These tests are discussed in some detail. The operation of the facility during these tests also afforded the opportunity to establish facility operating and maintenance procedures for this first-of-a-kind plant. Several capital improvements that were made to enhance the operation, monitoring and security of the plant are also described
