Abstract
The solid rotor end effects have been discussed widely in the literature decades ago. The end effect calculation has become important again, as large purely solid-rotor machines (8 MW at 12000 rpm) have been designed for gas compression applications. The paper introduces new ideas for applying a two-dimensional finite-element-method-based analysis and traditional analytic calculation techniques particularly in defining the power factor of a slitted purely solid rotor having ldquoend ringsrdquo made of the same solid material.
