Abstract
Internet telephony transfers telephone calls over IP networks or the Internet. PSTN and Internet use different transmission methods. Media gateways convert signaling and media formats of telephony between PSTN and IP networks. Media gateways are used to enable PSTN users to call Internet telephony users and vice versa. Because services on media gateways can handle calls regarding both PSTN users and Internet telephony users, advanced and converged services may reside on media gateways. It is desired that services can be flexibly provided to where they are needed. Mobile agent technology provides flexibility, mobility and scalability in many fields such as telecommunication, e-commerce etc. The architecture of the media gateway presented in this paper is based on an autonomous decentralized system architecture in order to provide maximum flexibility
