Abstract :
The use of solid-state EPROMs for high-reliability, high-capacity data storage in the ocean environment is described. These devices are attractive as data recording media because there are no moving parts, they require no power to retain data, and (unlike magnetic media) the data are not easily corrupted by the environment. The development of a 20-Mbyte EPROM recorder is summarized, along with a review of dominant EPROM failure modes and strategies for ensuring a reliable recording system
