Abstract
This paper presents a new speed controller based on a fuzzy tuning method for a variable reluctance motor (VRM) with good robustness and properties of the drive system. The fuzzy logic control (FLC) is implemented to design a nonlinear feedback controller which regulates the VRM drive operation around optimal excitation parameters at required operating conditions of torque and speed. The implementation of this novel technique demonstrates the capability of the fuzzy controller to deal with the nonlinearities presented in the VRM drive system and provides additional design freedoms to account for other design objects. The results show that the fuzzy controller exhibits superior transient performance over that of the conventional PI controller
