Abstract
A new generation of human-computer interfaces (HCI) is emerging from the ever increasing effort to facilitate efficient interaction between humans and modern, complex systems. Often the focus is on the ability of the HCI to support the user´s intentions (i.e., his goals and plans) in a prominent and proactive way. In the recent past, many diverse principles have been formulated and many techniques have been devised, implemented and tested in support of this ambitious goal. This paper summarizes the results of a general survey of research projects on intent support in human-computer dialogue. It draws a broad perspective on the status quo (in aid of HCI development) and on the possible future (in aid of HCI research)
