  • Abstract
Sodium-nickel chloride batteries have been successfully used in electric mobility applications for ten years. The features of this technology can prove very interesting in critical backup power telecom applications. Fiamm-Sonick, a new division created by merging FIAMM and MES-DEA experience in battery technologies, has garnered a significant experience in manufacturing Sodium-Nickel batteries. This paper presents the state of the art of sodium-nickel cells/batteries specifically developed for backup power telecom applications. Cell and battery design development, key manufacturing processes, performance characterizations and results from field operation in selected applications are reviewed.
