Abstract
Classically cellular networks have been analysed using Poisson call arrivals and negative exponential channel holding times. However, measurements on live networks have generally invalidated these assumptions. We propose a method for analysing cellular networks under more generalised arrival processes and more realistic channel holding time distributions. We present a model for accurately characterising the hand-off traffic offered by a cell to its neighbour in a simple two-cell scenario. Our two-cell model easily lends itself to be used as building blocks for analysing more general cellular network layouts. The results of the two-cell scenario may be used to determine customer-orientated grade of service parameters such as new call blocking and forced termination probability. We illustrate the accuracy of our analysis using comparison with simulation results
