Abstract
The authors illustrate some of the notions that can influence the modeling and design of protocols for broadband networks by analyzing the delay-throughput performance of two protocols for reliable multicast communication: a conventional protocol based on a direct extension of the positive acknowledgement scheme, and a recently developed protocol based on an enhanced negative acknowledgement scheme. They consider performance models that realistically reflect the broadband environment and present an analysis that quantifies the performance advantage of the protocol over the conventional one
