Abstract
Forces related to needs for improved air quality and increased energy security, which require changes in automotive power plant design, and in transportation fuel products over the next decade and beyond, are discussed. Both requirements are examined, showing that they necessitate technical changes that presently exist and are not a barrier. It is predicted that, spurred by government regulation, agreement between refiners and engine manufacturers will likely result in an improved diesel fuel in 1993. It is believed that this will set a precedent for fresh approaches to other issues
