Abstract
We summarize the results of a study of a two-tier resource allocation scheme for multimedia, microcellular, mobile networks. Through our analysis, we have found that by pooling some of the guard channels in multiple microcells in a cluster to facilitate sharing, the QoS (quality of service) as seen by the traffic can be improved. We also found that, contrary to intuition, the improvement does not continue as the pool grows bigger, and there exists an optimal point in this allocation scheme. We have obtained closed-form results for our analytical model and developed a simulation model to verify it. Comparison with a complete sharing policy is provided as well
