Abstract :
The ULTra PRT system exploits a range of modern technologies to provide safe driverless operation in a controlled environment. This provides a new form of public transport, designed to compete with the car in urban areas and offering major attractions in sustainability, passenger convenience and cost. The first application is starting operation at Heathrow airport. Questionnaire results show that the system is very attractive to passengers. The system can also connect effectively to conventional public transport systems to solve the “last mile” problem, thus attracting passengers to existing public transport. Full roll out at Heathrow would offer 365 tonnes of carbon saving per year.
