Abstract
The author documents a near-term design knowledge capture (DKC) system developed and implemented by McDonnell Douglas Space Systems Company (MDSSC) for Space Station Freedom Work Package 2 (WP-2). DKC is the process of capturing, analyzing, and maintaining design knowledge (the ´what, why, and how´ of a design) in a systematic, machine-interpretable form. This near-term DKC system is an archival network designed to make maximum use of current archives and filing systems within the MDSSC Space Station Division (SSD). The philosophy behind the approach is rooted in the discipline of library and information science. The system´s design allows easy evolution to later, more sophisticated DKC systems.<>
