Abstract :
With the rapid growth and deployment of digital generation and processing facilities within the production, post-production and broadcast industries, the amount of data being stored, transported and handled has mushroomed rapidly. Along with this growth the industries have faced problems associated with the management, accessibility and sharing of this data which have been faced by the computer and networking industries before. This paper examines the issues and challenges associated with the storage, management and sharing of digital data in post production and broadcast environments and presents an overview of how these challenges have been addressed in other industries. The specific issues addressed will be the storage and retrieval of large data structures, the selection of appropriate media and technologies to support this, and the techniques and technologies in use and emerging for the sharing of data over real and virtual networks. The major thrust of this paper is the examination of how solutions developed in the computing and networking industries are applicable in resolving some of the challenges faced by the broadcast and production industries as digital facilities become more and more prevalent. The paper will introduce existing and emerging technologies from both industry groups and examine their relevance and application. This will include computer technologies such as HSM and data warehousing along with network technologies such as ATM, SDH and FDDI and will include discussion of their application and integration
