Abstract
This paper presents a root cause analysis of a ground differential (restricted earth fault) protection misoperation including detailed description of the protection scheme, CT characteristics, and computer simulations performed to determine causes and solutions. High power laboratory tests were conducted to verify the simulation results in actual conditions and to compare effectiveness of the restricted earth fault protection design and operation using an overcurrent relay and a multifunction relay.
