Abstract :
Optical non-linearity of fibre telecommunication links is of crucial importance for data transmission performance. The high optical power level available with modern laser sources causes non-linear interaction in optical fibres. This is particularly important in wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) systems because of the non-linear interplay between many different spectral components of the aggregate signal. In this paper the results of a numerical investigation of non-linear phenomena in fibres: self-phase modulation (SPM), cross-phase modulation (CPM), four-wave mixing (FWM) and stimulated Raman scattering (SRS), and also their influence on WDM system performance are reported. The directions for optimisation of system design in view of actual international standardisation bodies recommendations are pointed out. In this paper the results of computer simulation of optical fibre transmission in a four-channel WDM transmission system with non-linear optical effects occurrence are reported
