Abstract :
It is demonstrated that by making a change to the dynamic bit allocation algorithm, the system performance of size-limited filter banks can be noticeably improved. These results appear to indicate that only small gains can be achieved using the new approaches. However, when such coders are used in a tree-structured subband decomposition (as is usually done in subband image coding), then the successive amplification of quantization noise near the image boundaries may have a more detrimental effect and more dramatic improvements in system performance are expected
