    Summary form only given. The wireless channel, particularly with user mobility, is a channel which exhibits wide variations in propagation characteristics. To operate near its ultimate potential, channel measurements and adaptive control are key requisites. In addition, user requirements for data retrieval can vary over several orders of magnitude. This places even further demands on the system to adapt to changing network conditions. Some approaches are presented which are particularly suited to spread spectrum communication systems
