Abstract :
Spatio-temporal resolution pyramids are well suited for scalable video codecs. An oversampled pyramid decomposition can be incorporated efficiently into either open-loop or closed-loop pyramid encoders. We discuss two different motion compensation (MC) techniques suitable for open-loop as well as for closed-loop pyramid coders. We compare the performance of each technique for both pyramid coders for the case of equal quantization noise in all resolution layers. Simulation results show that for this case all schemes have similar performance. By allowing higher quantization noise in the predicted frame it can be seen that bandpass MC performs up to 1 dB better
