Abstract
HF is still the only practical means of communications for Rescue Services and Special Forces operating in Scandinavian mountainous terrain at typical distances of 60-200 km. Communication over NVIS (near vertical incidence skywave) paths is challenging due to interference from the groundwave, a low MUF and absorption of the lowest frequencies. Particularly at high latitudes the absorption can be severe. We present results from a propagation experiment over two NVIS paths in northern Scandinavia using DAMSON (Doppler and Multipath Sounding Network). The aim of our study is to investigate the correlation between the two paths concerning such quantities as availability, SNR, Doppler and delay spread
