Abstract :
This paper introduces a novel fault current limiter (FCL) to restrict the short circuit fault. It consists of a transformer-type reactor in parallel with a compensation capacitor. The inductive reactance of the reactor is controlled by a discharge gap connected to its secondary winding. The differential equation is derived from the simplified system network including the fault current limiter. The initial conditions of the system network at the instant when the breakdown of the discharge gap begins are obtained by solving the differential equation. The EMTP-simulations are performed for examining the restricting effect of the fault current limiter after the breakdown. Then, the simulated results are compared with those reported by other authors and a better consistence is shown between them
