Abstract
The Department of Non-Conventional Energy Sources (DNES) of the Government of India has undertaken a nationwide photovoltaic-powered lighting program for Indian villages. Over 20000 lights have been provided in different parts of the country. An overview of PV-powered lighting systems for rural/remote locations is presented. In addition the system design, performance, and social aspects of PV-powered lighting are discussed. It is concluded that the photovoltaic village lighting program has been successful in meeting the minimum basic needs of electricity of some Indian villages. The field experience is encouraging, and the performance feedback has helped in design improvements
