Abstract :
This paper presents a prototype voltage source power condition system (PCS) for superconducting magnetic energy storage (SMES). The topology of voltage source PCS is a voltage source converter (VSC) in series with a two-quadrant DC chopper. Based on VSC mathematical model created, the VSC active and reactive current decoupled feedback control is proposed. Under the cooperating control of VSC and DC chopper, PCS can control active and reactive power transfer independently in four quadrants. MATLAB simulation is used to evaluate the performance of the applied control method. Simulation results show that PCS can achieve very fast response, the dynamics of the system is considerably improved. It also shows that the total harmonic distortion (THD) of the AC side current is very low, the output waveforms quality of SMES satisfies the demand of power grid
