Abstract :
This paper presents an electronic ballast for high pressure sodium (HPS) lamp, which mainly comprises a power factor correction preconverter, a half-bridge inverter, and a high-voltage ignitor. The power factor correction stage is performed by a boost converter controlled by an L6560 chip, which naturally provides the high power factor to the utility line. A half-bridge inverter operates above the resonant frequency to perform ZVS. The 3.5 kV ignition pulse generated by the ignitor is ample for the ignition of the lamp under study. Experimental results show the feasibility of HPS lamp operating at high frequency
