Abstract :
An analytical model and experimental evidence illustrating the effect of harmonic distortion on the locking range of a synchronous oscillator (SO) are presented. The theory predicts that the locking range is a strong function of the injection signal, the oscillation amplitude, and the harmonic distortion level of the oscillation. Distortion analysis of the SO leads to a distortion measure that is useful in predicting the influence of distortion on the locking behavior of the SO. Experimental evidence confirms the analytical predictions of the model, showing that an increase in the harmonic distortion leads to a decrease in the locking range. Measurements show that an emitter degeneration resistor easily modulates harmonic distortion and its effects on the locking range
