Abstract
The principles of UPS (uninterruptible power supply) design are elaborated, and the future role of rotary UPS is discussed. Rotary systems user fewer semiconductors and controls and have no need for filters due to their unique transformer. Heavily distorted loads, surge currents and fuseclearing do not cause any problems. Because of the minimum number of parts in the active electronic sections the reliability and efficiency are extremely high. The drawbacks are a higher price as well as slightly higher weight and space requirements
