Abstract :
This paper deals with the placement of a minimal set of PMUs so as to make system completely observable and collect more valuable dynamic data of power systems at the same time, i.e. place as more PMUs as possible on buses with higher parameter sensitivities. A practical sensitivity analysis method is adopted to calculate parameter sensitivities of every bus and an initial PMU placement is provided by an observability topology analysis method based on incidence matrix. At last the simulated annealing algorithm is used to find the sensitivity constrained optimal PMU placement for power system observability through minimizing a cost function. The rationality and validity of the approach introduced in this paper have been proved by its application in IEEE test systems
