  • Abstract
This paper presents transport methods that overcome loss and contention in radio networks while servicing multiple applications in a System of Systems environment. UDP with application-level retry avoids TCP´s tendency to misinterpret loss as contention. Prioritized FIFO queues combine various data streams (Unicast and Multicast, reliably delivered and send once, low and high priority, small messages and large files). Bandwidth shaping, a retry mechanism, QoS schemes, and packet size are parameterized to match the network (or network of networks) used for transport. The net result is a cross-layer optimization of application transport methods and radio network utilization that satisfies the distinct needs of multiple applications over high-loss, bandwidth-limited radio networks.
