Abstract :
This paper details the configuration and operation of an improved, linear homopolar EML, the STAR launcher, based on the recent work of Smith and the authors. The paper illustrates the advantages of the STAR launcher that is well suited for repetitive operation due to the option of operating efficiently with arc contacts and distribution of the driving current over large areas in the stator and the armature (projectile). In addition, this paper will compare the first order designs, electrical and thermal, of a linear STAR launcher and a conventional rail gun in the application of repetitive launch of 20 kg projectiles to 2.5 km/s at a rate of 6 per minute. The research and development necessary for implementation of the STAR launcher will also be discussed.
