  • Abstract
This paper describes techniques for computer simulation of protective relays so that their performance can be evaluated for a variety of situations without their actual use. Procedures for modeling microprocessor-based relay components, such as A/D converters and relay software, are discussed. The effectiveness of the proposed modeling is illustrated by simulating three designs of an overcurrent relay. Experimental results obtained from a frequency relay are compared with those from its computer simulation. A comparison of these results indicate that it is possible to accurately simulate the relay designs using a computer
