Abstract :
The advantages and disadvantages of satellite transmission systems relative to terrestrial transmission systems are discussed as a basis for projecting future applications. Satellite advantages include point-to-multipoint and multipoint-to-point coverage, and flexibility. Disadvantages include voice and data communications delays. Some of the misconceptions regarding the quality of voice and data over satellite channels are clarified. Potential applications of satellite technology to future telecommunications networks, such as ISDN are described
