Abstract
We investigate the problem of packet synchronization for the direct detection optical multi-pulse PPM (MPPM) systems with known symbol boundaries. The ML rule for locating packets is derived, various approximations to the optimal rule that are easier to implement are identified, and an upper bound on the correct synchronization probability is obtained
