Abstract :
Power Electronic converters are known to be generators of harmonics on both of their alternating current (AC) and direct current (DC) sides. They also transfer existing harmonics from one side to the other with an associated change of frequency. In other words, the converters intercouple the AC and DC systems and thus act as a transfer medium for harmonics. In part I of this two-part paper, sources of current and voltage harmonics, influence of power electronic converters on high voltage direct current (HVDC) transmission systems, and harmonics flow analysis with the 12-pulse converters of HVDC systems, are outlined.
