Abstract
The long term ageing problems associated with XLPE-insulated cables, specifically water tree ageing, forced the industry to take steps that will ensure cable manufacturers use the best grade (water tree retardant) insulation material. One of the tests that is now enforced as part of a Type Test is the accelerated ageing test at either 50 Hz for two years or at 500 Hz for four months. The high test voltage and high test frequency required for the tests poses some design and operating problems.
