Abstract
The issues pertinent to the reduction of active power losses in electric power systems (EPS) are studied in this paper. We proposed an approach providing an optimal location of FACTS devices so as to reduce power and energy losses in EPS. This approach is based on EPS clustering upon FACTS influence zones. Special algorithms have been developed to define FACTS zones of influence. Algorithms use fractional-polynomial relationships between power losses and FACTS parameters. The solution of the problem pertaining to the minimization of power losses in electric power system of Saint-Petersburg and Leningrad region is shown. Optimal number of FACTS devices and their placement in this EPS have been defined in order to ensure an effective loss minimization.
